Calvin Lecture Series

Calvin College and the Campus Ministry Department of the Christian Reformed Church Board of Home Missions are jointly sponsoring a lectureship series, entitled "The Calvin Lectureship." The purpose of this lectureship is to develop and communicate a Reformed Christian perspective on some crucial issue in an academic discipline or culture at large. It is intended that this lecture will have an evangelistic or pre-evangelistic effect on university campuses by demonstrating the power and vitality of a Christian worldview. Each year one member of the Calvin College faculty will be selected to give the Calvin lectures, which will be presented in a number of venues in North America and Europe.

  • The Calvin Lecturer will be awarded a stipend for the summer preceding the academic year of the lectureship to work on the lectures.
  • The Calvin Lecturer will visit two to three university campuses in North America each semester during the year of the lectureship, the selection and arrangements to be made in conjunction with CRC Campus Ministry and other Christian student organizations. While present on the campus, the Lecturer will present at least one public lecture with broad appeal, and also lead a seminar for campus ministry staff. Professional interaction with secular colleagues at the site may also be possible in some cases.
  • A one course per semester load reduction will be provided to facilitate the university visits.
  • The Lecturer's interim assignment will require travel to Europe to deliver the lectures at L'Abri Fellowship in Switzerland and at various university sites in cooperation with the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students.
  • An honorarium of $500 will be paid at the end of January in addition to travel expenses. Modest honoraria may in some cases be given by groups at the various universities where the lectures will be presented.
  • The Lecturer will be expected to develop the lectures into a small book to be published by a Christian publisher as part of a series. An additional honorarium of $1,000 will be paid by the college to the Lecturer upon delivery of an acceptable manuscript to the publisher.
  • The Calvin Lecturer will be selected without application by a committee consisting of the Provost, the Dean of Research and Scholarship, the Director of the Calvin L'Abri Program, the Director of Campus Ministries for the Christian Reformed Church, and the Director of Swiss L'Abri.
